Another Black Hair Myth -- BUSTED!!

Ok... So I've talked about this one on my tumblr time and time again but I wanted to bring it here to my hair blog and share with those who may not be familiar with my tumblr.

Use hair grease when your scalp is dry -- FALSE!!!

I know some black women are going to argue me down about this one. I was taught the same things you were when I was growing up, but hair grease is actually hindering you more so than helping you... and here's why:

  • Hair grease is usually petroleum based. And what do you think of when you think of petroleum? Vaseline. Right. Now would you want to put Vaseline on your scalp? Of course not! Why? Because it's too thick, right? This is the exact reason why you shouldn't use grease. Grease is based with petroleum or lanolin and it just sits on the scalp rather than penetrate the pores. I know what you're going to say, your hair sucks up the grease because your scalp is dry the next day or so... well you're right. You HAIR sucks up the grease/moisture... not your scalp. What you think is soaking into your scalp, is soaking into your hair. When you coat your scalp with this thick grease, not only are you keeping moisture, water, and other essential things out of your scalp, but you are keeping the good stuff IN! Your scalp makes essential oils to help your hair grow and you can be clogging your hair pores with the grease and keeping them from getting out properly.
So what do you do instead of using hair grease? Switch out those jars of greases for bottles of natural oils. Coconut, Avocado, and Jojoba! You're heard me shout the praises of coconut oil many times before. But use something that can penetrate your scalp and massage it in!

Not using grease will NOT make your hair stop growing. I literally have not used grease on my scalp since I was probably in high school.

But you don't have to just take my word for it. Do your research! YouTube! Google. Seriously check into the ingredients of grease and see for yourself!

Let's bust these hair myths and start growing our hair to the best of our knowledge and ability!
